    • Public Hearing on San Miguel County Planning & Zoning Department’s revisions to proposed ordinance to regulate gas/oil operations in San Miguel County, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7 at the County Commission Chambers in the county courthouse at 500 W. National Avenue.

  • The strong winds recently blew a barn down and scattered the parts all over. It is now just a pile of rubble as all of the pieces have been gathered up and put in a pile by some of the family.

    They did not want the boards to destroy other property as they blew around in the strong winds.

  • My 1910 Webster’s Dictionary defines weather as “a state of the atmosphere.” I’d have to say that at the moment, we are in  a heck of a state in this present atmosphere. We have experienced two of the driest months on record here at the Gascon reporting weather station, with no relief in sight.

    • The San Miguel Unit of the American Red Cross helps with any natural disaster and house fires. Persons interested in becoming a member are asked to contact Contact Connie Chavez at 425-6224. Meetings are held every third Thursday at 6 p.m. in Faith Hall.
    • The San Miguel County DWI Safe-Ride-Home Service operates from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rides are provided in the Las Vegas area from liquor establishments to your home, for service call 429-0336.

  • TUESDAY MARTES
    • St. Paul’s Peace, at 810 Eighth St, Las Vegas, will host their annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. The supper includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, ham, and drink.

    • Story Time at Carnegie Library, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5 in the children’s area of the public library. Free and open to the public.

    • The AAUW Annual Used Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1. The sale will be held at the Sala de Madrid, on the Highlands campus, Eighth and University. There will be a large selection of all kinds of books — paperbacks, best sellers, inspirational works, art books, children’s books, classics, collectibles — along with CDs and DVDs, all at bargain prices. Funds raised support NMHU scholarships.

  • Those horrible winds continue to howl a I write this in mid February. I just discovered a news item in an old Albuquerque Journal. Los Alamos was the snowiest spot in the state in January 2001. We recorded 50 inches of snow, with a moisture content of 2.13 here at our Gascon station. Oh, for those good old days!
