    • Immaculate Conception Parish is beginning registration for religious education classes for the 2011-12 school year. Registration will take place at the school from noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday until Aug. 12. Classes begin on Aug. 22. Sessions run for 1-1/2 hours once a week. Sessions are on Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost, to help defray cost of books, is $35 for the year.     • Habitat for Humanity in Las Vegas is about to start a new house. They build affordable homes for low-income families. If you are interested in helping with the next house (or in some other way), contact them at  454-4434 or habitatlv @gmail.com. They are looking for volunteers of any skill level.

  • Within a year of  the railroad’s arrival, the population in east Las Vegas equaled that of west Las Vegas, and between the two communities there was great activity and bustling enterprise. As a result, businessmen in particular began to see the need for basic services which only a municipal government could provide.

  • Anita Vigil, a 1987 graduate of Mora High School, will be inducted into the Abilene Christian College Hall of Fame during homecoming in October.

    The women’s basketball standout and six others will be inducted into the Texas college’s hall of fame for their accomplishments in sports ranging from baseball to track.

    In order to be nominated for the honor, an individual must have been out of college for at least 10 years. Nominees are then voted on by a selection committee. Vigil won the admiration of the committee and others who know her work.

  • And then just out of the blue, as they say, comes a long letter from one of our so many (about 60) kids that lived and worked with us during our busy dude ranch/cattle ranch operation. What a happy time to reminisce about life, the life and times of an important era in these many teenagers’ history.

    • Search and Rescue will meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, in the Professional Home Health Care Annex, 1931 Seventh in Las Vegas, across from the Forest Service office.

    • VFW Meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the VFW. Elections must be held or the VFW will be closed.
