  • My aged copy of the Chicago Daily News, dated Aug. 18, 1970, had a headline story about the many hippie communes that had sprung up in Northern New Mexico. Last week’s column quoted from this story, and I think yet another column should be written about our own experiences with these foreigners, mostly young adults, who came from a city environment and who thought they could just live off the land in this rugged part of New Mexico.

The commune that took over the meadow at the high end of Morphy Canyon was right across from our north line fence.

  • With wildland fire season upon us the CHET fire station has organized a Wildland Interface Summit starting at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Mora Elementary School gym.

Shawn Alvey, a captain at CHET Fire Department near Cleveland, said the event will include presentations by representatives of the state forestry department, National Resource Conservation Service, the National Forest Service and Mora County officials.

They will discuss fire, defensible spacing, and funding available for landowners pertaining to cross fencing, thinning and farming.
