  • A friend came by to borrow a book from my overloaded bookcase in my living room. There was an aged newspaper clipping in the book, so I sent the book home with him and I finally decided to check out this bit of newspaper memorabilia.

    The book is from my parents’ collection and from my big Valmora house bookshelf, a sort of timeline about New Mexico history.

    • Casa de Samaritan Homeless Shelter at 716 Grand Ave. is operating every night, providing meals, laundry and hot showers from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The shelter is open for overnight stays. The Thrift Store, at Seventh and Legion, offers vouchers for clothing, bedding, etc. Samaritan House offers a food pantry distribution every second and fifth Wednesday. Applications for rental services for those who may qualify are available call 454-1390.

    Highlands University

    The Highlands University Department of Music presents an Original Music Concert starting at 7 p.m. today (Friday) in Ilfeld Auditorium, 900 University Ave.

    Ticket prices for the Original Music Concert are $5. Highlands University students with valid IDs are free.

    The concert features works written and produced by Highlands University music students, many of whom are in the Music Technology Program. Music professor Edward Harrington directs the program and the concert.

    • Las Vegas Community Theatre Collective presentation of “Rhinoceros” by Eugene Ionesco doors open at 7 p.m. with show starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1, Saturday, May 2 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 at Sala de Madrid on the Highlands campus. Admission is $10 per adult and $7 for students and seniors.

    • The San Miguel County DWI Safe-Ride-Home Service operates from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Rides are provided in the Las Vegas area from liquor establishments to your home, for service call 429-0336.
    • The San Miguel Unit of the American Red Cross helps with any natural disaster and house fires. Persons interested in becoming a member are asked to contact Contact Connie Chavez at 425-6224. Meetings are at 6 p.m. every third Thursday in Faith Hall.
