  • When the calendar says it is January, it is weather- predicting time here in New Mexico. The oldtimers know the year’s weather can be predicted by observing the “cabañuelas.” My Ruben “Cobos Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish” defines cabanuelas as the name given to the first twelve days of the month of January. Each one of these days is supposed to show the kind of weather to be had during each of the twelve months of the new year.”

  • I still meet people who say they were at the Valmora auction and/or the auction we had here at the ranch, way back in the early 1990s. Valmora was my family’s tuberculosis sanatorium established in 1904. Obviously when a place collects almost 90 years of “stuff” the only way to move it out is with a sale.
