  • Monday, Dec. 13, 1965 — A smoldering smoke-producing mattress fire on Fourth Street brought both Las Vegas fire departments to the scene at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Pat Lujan was in his front yard and smelled smoke. Going to the front door of his neighbor’s house, Lujan found Harold Gifford groping around in the thick smoke-filled room. “I tried to turn on the lights, but they wouldn’t come on,” Lujan said later. Lujan was able to guide Mr. Gifford out of the house by the time the fire trucks arrived. He was examined at a local hospital.
