Hospice volunteers may read to a patient, take a walk, hold a hand when needed, play games or simply listen and provide companionship.   • United World College-USA is giving back to the community once again. On Saturday, the college will host a community fundraiser “The Big Gala” to benefit Samaritan House. The event scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Montezuma Castle ballroom on the campus will include an international cuisine, special activities, a silent auction and a cultural performance.

    All proceeds from the event will donated to the local Samaritan House in support of its mission to provide food and shelter to homeless and people in the community.

    • Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas Annual Pancake Day, breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Flamingo Room. Adults are $8 each and children 10 and younger eat for $5. All you can eat pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea or milk.

    Lt. Commander J. Jacob Saiz was installed as the new commanding officer of the Navy Operational Support Center in El Paso, Texas, during a change of commander ceremony on Jan. 10.

    Saiz is the grandson of Herman and Lucy Saiz of Las Vegas. His grandfather Herman — a decorated veteran of the Pacific Campaign — placed the command pin on his grandson’s uniform.

    Several family members, including parents John and Maria Saiz of Aztec, N.M., also attended.

    The original one-act play, “Sheltered Women,” will have its premiere performance on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20, 21, and 22. Nat Gold Players will present the play at Charlie’s Spic and Span event center at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors and can be obtained from Tome on the Range or any cast member or Nat Gold Player board member.

    • Fourth Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates needs volunteers. The local CASA program is taking applications for volunteers. Call CASA at 454-0223 or visit the office to work with children who have been removed from their homes. Because of abuse and neglect. Children are in state custody and living in foster care.

    • “Flores and Friends” featuring Yasmin Flores, Linda King, Andre Garcia-Nuthmann will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20 at Kennedy Lounge on the Highlands campus. Admission is $10 and it is a fundraiser for the purchase of instrumental music.
