  • I was all set to write a column about our areas “Rails and Trails events” around here (mostly in Las Vegas in the 1980s and ‘90s). That will be postponed because I just discovered a 1917 American Cookery magazine, the December issue and there are some nifty hints and ideas published so long ago.

    • Casa de Samaritan Homeless shelter at 716 Grand Ave. is operating every night, providing meals, laundry and hot showers from 6 to 8:30 p.m. From November through March, the shelter is open for overnight stays. Their Thrift Store, at Seventh and Legion, offers vouchers for clothing, bedding, etc. Samaritan House offers a food pantry distribution every second and fifth Wednesday. Applications for rental services for those who may qualify are available. Call 454-1390.

    Late last month several children presented shoebox gifts as part of the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Gift ministry that Calvary Chapel Las Vegas sponsors every year. The ministry is part of Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit Christian relief and evangelical organization that  is headed by Franklin Graham.
