  • I am always grateful for our beautiful summer days, days with no wind, brilliant sun and not a cloud in the sky.

I learned long ago to soak up a day like this as much as is possible, because winter is just around the corner. And here in our mountains the rains have come at just the right time so every flower that has a bud is now in full bloom.

What treat it is to prowl through our high mountain meadows at this time of year! I was invited to a wedding recently and was happy to see old friends that I have known for ages from the Valmora and the Watrous area.

The hummingbird population here at the ranch is now in very full swing. Friends asked me how many hummers I was feeding, and I have to say I have no idea.

Counting hummingbirds at my four feeders is like counting the legs on a herd of cattle, then dividing by four, as an old timer told me a long time ago. I wish I had stock in a sugar producing company at this time of year. And thankfully we have lots of mountain flowers in full bloom now for these little birds to enjoy as well.
