    The San Miguel/Mora County Fair will take place until to Saturday, Aug. 13 at the fairgrounds located just north of Las Vegas. Friday’s events start at 8 a.m. with a pig show followed by goats, lambs, steers and heifers. A horse show is scheduled for 4 p.m. followed by a watermelon-eating contest at 6 p.m. and wrapping up Saturday’s events is a branding iron social at 7 p.m. There is no charge to attend the fair on Friday.     Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance will host a community work day doing thistle control. Volunteers are asked
    to meet at La Placita Fire Department in the village of Gallinas. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and to wear
    work boots, long sleeve shirts, a hat and sunscreen. Water and snacks will be provided. For more information, call

    10 a.m.
    Carnegie Summer Reading Program will feature Johnny Moon on the lawn of Carnegie Library. Lunch to follow presentation. Program is free, and children 2 to 12 years are welcome.

    5:30 p.m.
    There is an information meeting to learn about foster and adoptive parenting opportunities with New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department at the local CYFD office at 2518 Ridge Runner Road. Currently there are 68 children in San Miguel County in the foster care system.

    11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    Flippers and Feathers Fun at Maxwell Wildlife Refuge will take place at the refuge in Maxwell. There will be plenty of activities including a hayride through the refuge, canoe races, fishing tournament, and archery practice.     An artist reception will take place at El Fidel Restaurant for Bambi Doe Blake’s Assemblage and Altered Art Show.
