  • Mora County Notebook - Crocheted caps given to cancer patients

    The Crochet Ole Ladies of the Mora Senior Citizens spent weeks crocheting colorful caps to give to cancer patients. There is an array of different happy colors and styles. On Nov. 1 the group traveled to the Taos Hospital to present the caps to the Marketing and Communication Coordinator, Maria Meadowcroft. The caps are to be used as they are needed for cancer patients.

    The club is a part of the Mora Senior Center program with Carol  Westbrook as the instructor.

    Add day — Fort Union and the National Park Service will honor all military veterans and their families on Veterans’ Day weekend by waiving the entrance fee and military and family members.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Shy boy becomes kids’ big brother

    Hopefully the housefly invasion here will soon peak. The window on my back porch is covered, crawling with black flies. I have a remedy that seems to work. I put a few drops of dish soap in a shiny pan, fill it with water and put it on the windowsill. This contraption attracts the flies that  die quickly when they fly into it. Someone said the soap blocks their air vents. Our resident magpies love this dead fly collection when I dispose of it.

  • Mora County Notebook - Career Association hosts haunted house

    On Saturday the Career Association (JAG) of Mora High School hosted the Haunted House for the enjoyment of the Mora citizens. It was held for several  hours in the band room at the elementary gymnasium.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - It’s November; where did summer go?

    Here it is, one of the first days of November, and I’m wondering where summer went. I note one last brilliant gold aspen tree has held on to its leaves as I write this, an aspen that is high up in the mountain, protected by the strong winds that claimed its neighboring trees. Our scientists say all of our aspens are directly related to one root. The show they produced this year was spectacular here. Their genes must be strong!

  • Mora County Notebook - Walk for the Cure held Sunday

    The Career Association which is a part of the Jobs for America’s Graduates-NM coordinated a Walk for the Cure event on Sunday.

    They also got the help of Peer Educators, Middle School Student Government, and the BPA.

    Alex Martinez, the president of the Career Association, was responsible for overseeing the entire operation.

    The different school organizations were responsible for creating signs and decorating the route for the walk. The gate of Mora High School held attractive signs announcing the walk for a cure.
