  • Mora County Notebook - Martinez receives doctorate in leadership

    Mora resident received her doctorate degree from University of New Mexico. Phyllis Martinez, a native of Mora, received her doctorate degree in educational leadership in the December graduation. Her dissertation was the study of bilingual education at the high school level. To garner the information for her dissertation she spent hours interviewing staff members, parents and students.

  • Mora County Notebook - Commissioner travels to Washington, D.C.

    Mora County Commissioner, Paula Garcia traveled to Washington, D.C., to represent New Mexico at the meeting of the National Association of Counties recently. The annual conference brings together the presidents and executive directors of each state association of counties. Garcia attended as the President-Elect of the New Mexico Association of Counties.

    During the past three years, Garcia has served on the board of directors of NMAC. She has been involved with developing policy recommendations for the New Mexico State Legislature and the United States Congress.

    Because I am primarily a news junkie when it comes to watching television, I am out of the loop when popular, fictional series come along. However I happened upon a PBS special very recently that really rang a bell with me.

  • Mora County Notebook: Jovenes de Amistad band entertains seniors

    The young musicians of the Jovenes de Amistad Band played for the entertainment and dancing at the Mora Senior Citizens New Year’s Party on Dec. 30.

    The senior citizens had enjoyed a turkey dinner served to them by volunteers. After the dinner the group was treated to music supplied by the young members of the Jovenes de Amistad Band.

    The band was organized in 2012 with Ferdinand Jr. and Julius Valencia of Chacon and, Emmerick Martinez, of Mora. Johnny Martinez joined the group at the end of 2012.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Weather can be predicted by ‘cabañuelas’

    When the calendar says it is January, it is weather- predicting time here in New Mexico. The oldtimers know the year’s weather can be predicted by observing the “cabañuelas.” My Ruben “Cobos Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish” defines cabanuelas as the name given to the first twelve days of the month of January. Each one of these days is supposed to show the kind of weather to be had during each of the twelve months of the new year.”
