  • Mora County Notebook - Mora High School homecoming successful

    Homecoming Week at Mora High School was a lot of fun and also work for the student government committee and their sponsor, Marco Sanchez. It was a week of extra fun with special days as bad hair day, pep rally, talent show and last the Homecoming Parade and game.

    At the game the queen and king were crowned and the royal court took over the basketball floor to process around the gym. The queen was Destiny Pacheco and king was Quintin Dobbs. The other candidates for the king and queen also marched in the processional.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - What treasures await in what we call junk?

    In the “Are there additions or corrections to the columns” section of the Optic where my “Palabras Pinturescas” column pops up, I need to follow up on some of my recent stories.

    I mentioned the book “He Heard His Brother Call His Name” by Patsy Dorris Hale. I was told it was only available on Amazon, and that was before I visited my favorite bookstore, Tome on the Range. They have copies on order as we speak.

  • Mora County Notebook - Martinez receives doctorate in leadership

    Mora resident received her doctorate degree from University of New Mexico. Phyllis Martinez, a native of Mora, received her doctorate degree in educational leadership in the December graduation. Her dissertation was the study of bilingual education at the high school level. To garner the information for her dissertation she spent hours interviewing staff members, parents and students.

  • Mora County Notebook - Commissioner travels to Washington, D.C.

    Mora County Commissioner, Paula Garcia traveled to Washington, D.C., to represent New Mexico at the meeting of the National Association of Counties recently. The annual conference brings together the presidents and executive directors of each state association of counties. Garcia attended as the President-Elect of the New Mexico Association of Counties.

    During the past three years, Garcia has served on the board of directors of NMAC. She has been involved with developing policy recommendations for the New Mexico State Legislature and the United States Congress.

    Because I am primarily a news junkie when it comes to watching television, I am out of the loop when popular, fictional series come along. However I happened upon a PBS special very recently that really rang a bell with me.
