  • Palabras Pintorescas - Table setting resembled that of ‘Downton Abbey’

Because I am primarily a news junkie when it comes to watching television, I am out of the loop when popular, fictional series come along. However I happened upon a PBS special very recently that really rang a bell with me.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Weather can be predicted by ‘cabañuelas’

When the calendar says it is January, it is weather- predicting time here in New Mexico. The oldtimers know the year’s weather can be predicted by observing the “cabañuelas.” My Ruben “Cobos Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish” defines cabanuelas as the name given to the first twelve days of the month of January. Each one of these days is supposed to show the kind of weather to be had during each of the twelve months of the new year.”

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Auctions are always great social events

I still meet people who say they were at the Valmora auction and/or the auction we had here at the ranch, way back in the early 1990s. Valmora was my family’s tuberculosis sanatorium established in 1904. Obviously when a place collects almost 90 years of “stuff” the only way to move it out is with a sale.

  • Mora County Notebook: Church presents Christmas story play

Last Wednesday, the Mora Valley Baptist Church presented its annual Christmas story. The program began with the lighting of candles by the youth.

The play began with the prediction of John the Baptist’s birth and Jesus birth by Gabriel. Then the visit of the angel to Mary, her visit with Elizabeth, John’s birth, It continued with all the details before the birth of Jesus and the action after the birth as the holy family flees to Egypt. It ended when the family finally returned to Nazareth.
