  • Mora County Notebook - Basketball is a year-round sport for Mora

Yes, basketball season is over as far as the high school schedule is concerned, but it is still there. They have the Amanda Serna Memorial Basketball Camp coming up during the summer months. Some of the Mora athletes are going to the big North/South competition. NBA is still showing on television. Mora students have been busy with baseball, softball and track now,  but basketball has always been and will always be the king of sports in the Mora Valley.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Has El Niño finally arrived?

Suddenly it is spring, and as I write this, storm clouds are building on our mountain tops. Has El Niño finally arrived? Often, in years past, the heaviest, wettest (and deepest) have come in May in our mountains here.
And back in the day, the acequias, the always-flowing ditches, were overflowing when the spring runoff started. There is almost no water in any of the ditches at the moment.

  • Mora County Notebook - 75 kids take part in Easter egg hunt

On Saturday, the Guadalupita Volunteer Firemen Auxiliary hosted an egg hunt and event for the family.  It was well attended and a great success. There were 75 children who took part in the egg hunt. There were many prizes donated by different merchant and individuals.

Inside Betty Richardson and a group of women manned the silent auction, bake sale and gave out the prizes. Outside James Daring and his crew took care of the food service serving hot dogs, nachos and drinks.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Writer composes a dissertation upon roast pig

My mind can wander, change the subject at the drop of a hat, as they say. One thing leads to another, and suddenly the conversation changes, reverts to yet another experience, a visit to old times once again.

Case in point: My neighbor and I have a visit about pork, as in bacon, ham, sausage, etc. Seems as how bacon has doubled in price in just the last month. Apparently a virus is killing baby pigs by the thousands, therefore our traditional breakfast bacon will be a luxury item... not good new for a lot of us. I suspect lard will also become pricey.

  • Mora County Notebook - 102-year-old Lazaro Garcia honored

Lazaro Garcia celebrated his 102 birthday on Monday, April 14, 2014. The celebration took place at the Mora Senior Center with many family members, friends and well- wishers in attendance as well as the regular seniors who attend the center each day.

During the lunch hour the Archuletas came to sing Las Mañanitas and some other happy songs. After the lunch Gino Rinaldi, Secretary of New Mexico Aging and Long Service Department presented a commemorative  certificate to Mr. Garcia for his 100 and two years, and community service for many years.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Memories of the Mountain View Dairy

Here is a photograph, of a picture from times long ago. That is my late father-in-law, Boge Bartley, proudly standing in front of the Bartley family delivery truck.

Boge (his proper name was John Fitzhugh) started the dairy in the 1940s. He and his wife, Anna Bell Bartley bought a pasture on the main road leading to Montezuma.

There were no buildings or improvements there, but electricity and city water were available right next to the road.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora group hosts annual seed exchange

The Mora Grows Seed Library hosted its second annual seed exchange and first seed saving class on April 6 in Mora. The event was sponsored by Los de Mora Local Growers Cooperative and Collaborative Visions. The Seed Broadcast van was parked outside the building with its seed collection and recording equipment eager to record the local seed stories.

Seed exchange and a pot luck lunch opened the day, followed by seed-saving techniques. Different presenters brought much life by addressing issues gardeners and farmers face today.
