  • Palabras Pintorescas - My time as a Highlands ambassador

Our boss and editor at the Optic discovered a picture of me taken just 39 years ago here. Question was: What was the event; why was the picture taken?

I didn’t have a very good answer for him, other than I knew I was presented with an award by Reuben Valdez, the alumni director and public information director at Highlands University so long ago.

  • Mora County Notebook - Center receives most-improved award

The Mora Senior Center recently received an award for being the most improved center in the state of New Mexico.

They were presented with a plaque to commemorate the award. The award was presented by Jenny Martinez, director of the Area Agency for the Aging and Tim Arner, director of North Central New Mexico Economic Development. The reports were prompt and well done.

The number of clients has grown. Wal-Mart has donated money to increase the home deliveries. They now deliver more than 40 home delivered meals every day,  which has doubled since last year.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora High School homecoming successful

Homecoming Week at Mora High School was a lot of fun and also work for the student government committee and their sponsor, Marco Sanchez. It was a week of extra fun with special days as bad hair day, pep rally, talent show and last the Homecoming Parade and game.

At the game the queen and king were crowned and the royal court took over the basketball floor to process around the gym. The queen was Destiny Pacheco and king was Quintin Dobbs. The other candidates for the king and queen also marched in the processional.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - What treasures await in what we call junk?

In the “Are there additions or corrections to the columns” section of the Optic where my “Palabras Pinturescas” column pops up, I need to follow up on some of my recent stories.

I mentioned the book “He Heard His Brother Call His Name” by Patsy Dorris Hale. I was told it was only available on Amazon, and that was before I visited my favorite bookstore, Tome on the Range. They have copies on order as we speak.

  • Mora County Notebook - Martinez receives doctorate in leadership

Mora resident received her doctorate degree from University of New Mexico. Phyllis Martinez, a native of Mora, received her doctorate degree in educational leadership in the December graduation. Her dissertation was the study of bilingual education at the high school level. To garner the information for her dissertation she spent hours interviewing staff members, parents and students.
