  • A math wizard — Willie Sanchez

A recent KFUN radio program that Jesus Lopez hosts had an old friend of mine as a guest. Willie Sanchez and I were students at New Mexico Highlands University together a long time ago.

This was the early 1950s when our veterans from both World War II and the Korean conflict returned and went to school via the G.I. Bill. They came to get a good and useful education so they could move on with their lives. Some of us younger students didn’t have the same work and study habits they had. In other words, they came to get an education and they had little time to goof off.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora County has lots of college graduates

Sanchez in guidance and counseling, Shan Marie Sanchez in curriculum instruction, Dayle Adkins in social work, Loric Lucero in social work, and Sandra L. Romero in social work.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Which came first? Our kids knew

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Our kids knew the answer to that early on. Most ranches have chickens for many reasons, starting with the really fresh eggs for breakfast, then followed by super good fried chicken for dinner, all collected from the nearby chicken coop.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora County has annual clean-up

Last Friday’s windstorm left lots of trash for the annual clean-up crew. Making the Mora Chamber of Commerce annual Clean-up Day a great success.

People stopped at the parking lot to pick up bags and safety vests. The volunteers then picked up trash and cleaned the main highway right-of- way and some side roads.

Those who could not work on Saturday planned to pick up trash on Sunday but could not do so because of the snowstorm that passed through town.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The book that brought life to memories

I am lucky! I have friends in many places who consistently keep me informed about going’s on in the big world out there.

Many of us are avid readers and we share and promote any good read we encounter. A recent call from a friend down our road told me to hurry down to our favorite bookstore, Tome on the Range, and pick up a copy of “Appetite for America” by Stephen Fried.
