  • The bear that isn’t soft and cuddly

    Well, what can I say? Bear with me, because this is a story almost out of ranch-style science fiction, or something like that. This is yet another vent that “just what do you do on a ranch” list — I sometimes keep.

  • Mora County Notebook: Tony Pacheco celebrates his 89th birthday

    Juan Antonio “Tony” Pacheco recently celebrated his 89th birthday with his brothers, their wives and their families, nephews, nieces and grand nephews and nieces at the Tilford Memorial building in Chacon. The memorial building was a fitting place for his celebration as he and his family were born and raised in Chacon and spent their early years at the Mission School.

    Our kids often heard that old expression: “Good things often come in small packages.” Yes, good things do come in small packages, and in this instance it is a book by a local author, and it is hot off the press, as they say.

  • Mora County Notebook: Coach James Branch comes full circle

    James Branch, the new basketball coach at Mora High School, has gone full circle. He now leads the team that he once played for during his days as a student at Mora High School in the 1970s. During his high school days, Branch was a star basketball player for the Rangers, coached by Arthur Romero and Douglas Velarde. He was fast and his athletic ability helped earn the Rangers a trip to the state tournament. Branch was given honorable mention in All State basketball in 1977 — the year he graduated from Mora High School.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The surprise concoction

    My life is full of surprises, and just this week I had yet another one. Daughter Sherry asked me for my recipe for that seven- layer casserole I used to make when our guest ranch was in full swing here.

    Oh, yes, our kids had to eat it often and there was a bit of grumbling (perhaps sharing their plate with the dog) so I never expected to hear any of them actually wanting the recipe.

    Dakota Alcon has many ribbons and honors in marksmanship with a rifle shooting and bow archery contests because he would not give up.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora 4-H shines at county fair

    The Mora 4-H Club members did very well in their participation in the Mora /San Miguel County Fair recently. Thirty one Mora 4-H members took part in this year’s fair.  

    Several Mora County natives  won grand champions and reserve grand champions with their animals.

    In the lamb division Abigail Aragon had the Grand Champion Lamb and Augustine Romero the Reserved Champion Lamb.

    In the goat division Pete Aragon had the Grand Champion Goat and Jett Smith the Reserved Champion Goat.

    Candace Roybal had the Reserve Champion Steer.

    Wednesday
    6:30 p.m. - Free showing of “Gasland” a documentary about the toxic chemicals that are polluting aquifers and streams because of natural gas drilling. Popcorn and drinks will be provided at Tapetes de Lana in Mora.
