The Mora School grounds are not vacant for the summer. Although school is out there is a lot going on.

There is a basketball camp under way for the young people who are aspiring to be on the Rangers and Rangerettes team in the future.

Another basketball camp just finished which included children from ages 6 to 13 under the  direction of James Branch, the new Mora Rangers basketball coach.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: State’s landscape is changing

There is a change in our New Mexico landscape. I have said for a long time our state flower should really be the broken down car that decorates so many yards in this state. The high price of steel suddenly brings a welcome change as all sorts of old junk steel is now hauled off and sold.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The delicious gift that keeps giving

I never know what my friends will share with me next. They just hand me something, sometimes in a brown paper bag, and I soon discover I have yet another treasure in my possession.

I was handed a big ziplock bag with some white, foamy semi-liquid in it right after Christmas. My friends know I like to cook and often bake various breads and desserts. I really wasn’t sure just what I had in this new baggie, but a recipe came with it for Amish friendship bread.

  • Mora County Notebook: Carnival comes to Mora

Are you ready to have a good time?” asks Bev, the friendly lady at the ticket booth, as she looks down at the eager faces of the children coming up to her booth for the  parents to buy tickets to the carnival. Then she raises her eyes to the adult and asks, “How may I help you?”

No difference how she feels — she has a smiling face and a friendly demeanor. She is the first person customers see as they enter the carnival.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Betsy also known as the the green-grass guzzler

One would say it is a dog’s life on this old ranch, but it is also a horse’s life, to be sure. Our horses are mostly retired, are fat and sassy, and roam around a small pasture at ranch headquarters. Quite a picture of happiness, I’d say.
