  • Palabras Pintorescas - Surviving the winter and the roasting

Suddenly it is springtime in the Rockies again. And after such a long, cold and windy winter, I wondered if any plant, tree, weed would survive our weather onslaughts.

I am happy to report that our grass is green again, there are buds on our various trees and the lilacs may bloom soon. The early plum blossoms are frozen, but that happens every year here. My calendar has all sorts of dates penciled in.

  • Lazaro Garcia celebrates 100th birthday

This past Saturday,  a large crowd of family and friends gathered to help Lazaro Garcia celebrate his 100th birthday at the Mora school cafeteria. His relatives and friends came from all over New Mexico and seven different states to honor Garcia on this momentous occasion. Folks came from as far away as: Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin and Wyoming
Garcia was seated at the far end of the room in a comfortable chair where he stood to greet the many people who came to wish him a happy birthday.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The art of water and metal witching

In the “one thing that leads to another” category in my crazy life, a very recent Tom McDonald column about witching for water brought back yet another memory from long ago.

Mike Martinez was our game warden when we moved to this ranch in 1962.

  • Mora County Notebook - Easter Egg Hunt huge success

Lent and the Easter season mean a lot to the people of Mora.

There are special Bible studies and services during this time to remind us that this is a special religious time.

It is also a time of joy in the new spring that is upon us. There are parties and special times for all.

One tradition that is carried out is the egg hunt. The Mora people really went all out for this custom. Children from 8 months to 80 years enjoyed the traditional custom.

The sheriff’s department held its second annual egg hunt on March 31.

I am happy to report my “catcher’s mitt” still fits, and no, I did not have to use it. My doctor father always told us he had his catcher’s mitt with him when he delivered a baby, and he did deliver many babies as a country doctor.
