  • Palabras Pintorescas - Grateful for the Mayo Clinic and good health

Anything medical catches my eye, and I discovered some small handouts that my doctor father kept in his office. These were brochures with a permit for immunization form on the back.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora native gets recognized at legislature

Manuel Montoya, a Mora native and graduate of Mora High School has received yet another honor. He had graduated with a double doctorate from Emory University and has come back to New Mexico to be a professor at UNM and serve the people here.

Recently at the state legislature’s UNM Day Manuel along with a few other faculty were recognized on the floor of the house and senate for their distinctive work at UNM.

UNM President David Schmidly praised Montoya at the event.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Discovering treasures and people

We all have a chapter or two in our lives that could be titled “People I have known,” more specifically, people who we remember for some specific reasons. My list is a long and fun one in this category, and a recent event brought back many long ago memories.

I discovered a treasure of sorts way back in a closet, a full rather strange treasure for most people. I have a half-full bottle of Guisano Rajo Mezcal — complete with the traditional worm in the bottle — that was given us here at the guest ranch by Peter Hurd in the late 1960’s.

  • Mora County Notebook: Tapetes de Lana still a growing venture

When a person walks in the door of Tapetes de Lana’s gallery something new meets the eye. The looms for weaving are still there and the beautiful finished products from those looms  line the walls as usual.

But you are now greeted by Rebekah Albert asking you if you would like some coffee, tea, cocoa or cappuccino from the newly added Espresso bar. Tapetes also serves pastries that have been bought locally. When the commercial kitchen has electricity it will be baking its own pastries — which will mean the hiring of yet another local person.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The attack of the bark beetle

The winds are less, and they are more-or-less warm, so my faithful dog companions and I have decided it is time to venture out into the forest once again. I hope it is between snowstorms, and, yes, there are still big snowdrifts on the shady side of the hills, but the big snowpacks needed to keep our mountains healthy and wet this summer still need lots of snow.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora High celebrates homecoming

Last Thursday was a happy day for the town and the students of Mora High School. After the week of preparation for the big day it finally arrived with beautiful weather and a community’s backing.

The students had their pep rally and talent show.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Buggy rides — One of life’s simple pleasures

Sometimes life’s pleasures come along in small doses. Very recently I had the pleasure of having both Bartley grandchildren here with their parents for several days of revisiting the ranch together. They are now in their mid-20s, and are interested in so many facets of this old place.

Son John decided it was time for a slide show one night. My collection of slides that date back almost 50 years here paint quite a picture of life on the ranch, which included pictures of them when they were small. There are many pictures of horses and cows, of course.
