  • Palabras Pintorescas: Noodles bring up Chinatown memories

I discovered a can of Chow Mein noodles in the dark of my pantry recently. My mother always kept them on hand, should some unexpected guests arrive around the next meal here on the ranch. With some cooked meat, (beef or chicken) some vegetables or some soy sauce, she could whip up a sweet and sour Chinese lunch that anyone would enjoy.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora native opens new practice

Another Mora native has a doctorate.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Life is never simple on a ranch

No two days are ever the same on a ranch. Just about the time I think my life and all that goes with it is slow and calm, my bubble gets busted once again.

Such is the case recently when the clouds built up over our mountains, the temperature dropped like a rock, and before we know it, we had a snow storm of sorts surrounding us.

Now our cows are not dummies, because most of them have babies (calves in ranching terms), they decided they’d better spend the following cold and snowy night in, under our sheds.

  • Mora County Notebook: Chamber holds annual banquet and clean-up

The Mora Chamber of Commerce held its seventh annual banquet on April 20 at the VFW Hall. It was well attended.

The main speaker for this year’s banquet was Dora Dominguez of the New Mexico Economic Development Department.

In addition to Dominguez’s presentation, there was a silent auction with a representation of the work and art of the members. Donations were also made by chamber merchants.

During the banquet, awards were presented to deserving citizens of the community. New members and new businesses were also recognized.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Saddle up, cowgirl

Once in a while I run into a photograph that makes me stop and stare, then burst out laughing. That surely is the case this time. Imagine having that old box camera ready to shoot just as the action takes place. I’d say that photographer should have been given an award of some kind.

Yes that is my mother, Alice Gellenthien, helping a lady mount a horse. The lady (I don’t know who she is) was probably short, possibly “portly” as my mother would say, and was probably visiting from a far away place, such as Chicago.

  • Mora County Notebook: Birthday tradition continues for Garcia

On Wednesday morning a large group of friends of Lazaro Garcia gathered at Hatcha’s for his birthday breakfast. This has been a tradition for more than 30 years with the exception of last year when the whole community gathered to help him celebrate his 100th  birthday.

Now that he is 101, he has continued the traditional celebration with breakfast with his friends. It began more than three decades ago with a few men who gathered at Almanzar’s Café in Cleveland.
