Mora County

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Homemade brew almost caused her to choke

September weather can be spectacular, and it surely was an absolutely perfect Sunday after last Sept. 11, when our neighboring community, Pendaries, hosted an area sampling of goods and more at the community center there. This was a real show, taste-and-tell event and we, the public, were asked to sample, visit with the various cooks and vote for our favorite foods.

What could be better than cruising around tables of chiles, salsas and sips of our Mora County wines while visiting with friends and neighbors?

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Franklin Jones knew state’s finances better than anyone

I’ve always been a political news junkie of sorts, mostly because I have been exposed to our New Mexico politics in quite a different way here at our isolated mountain guest ranch. I often watch “New Mexico in Focus” on Chanel 5 Friday night. This is a good way to learn more about what goes on in Santa Fe and beyond.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Antonia Apodaca’s music enthralls appreciative public

I have known many talented people during my long life here in our mountains. And just over a week ago my so-very-long-time friend and neighbor was featured on a special program on our Public Broadcasting network, Channel 5 out of Albuquerque.

The program was titled “Nuestra Musica.” Some of New Mexico’s most renown musicians gather at Santa Fe’s Lensic Theater.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Highlands dining halls served up great food

Our area school buses often turn around in our big drive-way. My hat is tipped, generously to our great neighbors and drivers of these big machines, Billy Sanchez and Alvin Martinez.

Our three kids made enough noise riding in the back seat of our station wagon long ago to drive their father or me nuts as we transported them to town when necessary.

And now, when these three adults get together they laugh about the fun and games of riding the bus. Things have changed all for the better now, starting with paved roads on most of the routes.
