  • Palabras Pintorescas: We need deep snow to recharge our aquifers

Being a local weather observer for our National Weather Service is a regular and daily part of my life. My knowledge of meteorology is slim at best, but I watch our so varied weather patterns closely. Weather watching is an every-day event in our mountains and we do see seasons change, sometimes with a vengeance.

I have been given several national awards for my many years of weather recording, and I had no idea there was yet another award out there in the clouds, so to speak.

  • Great night at CASSM

Mora Elementary was booming on Wednesday night with anxious learners for the CASSM program spearheaded by parent volunteer Monica Aragon.

On Wednesday evening, New Mexico Highlands University professors Gil Gallegos and Edward Martinez shared their expertise with the large group of enthusiastic kids who attended the monthly event.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Assignment was simple, task not quite

My assignment was fairly simple. Dig out those old boxes of family photographs, plus the ones stashed around your house, so I can put them on the computer for final preservation. Sounds simple enough, but... about 10 hours longer ... a full day of scanning, the job is done and I’m still amazed at what modern technology can do.

My cousin Yolanda has become the family expert on our history. She is a walking ancestry nerd, I’ve just discovered.

  • Mora County Notebook - Rains places at Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous competition

    Submitted to the Optic

DonDiego Rains, 10, of Holman, placed in various competitions at the Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous in Colorado, which he attended with his father in July.

Rendezvous is a recreation of the fur trade era where everything in sight must be of a pre-1840 style. Clothing is of the period, tents are canvas and cooking is over wood. All vehicles must be out of camp by Saturday evening and stay out until the following Saturday afternoon. No plastic, nylon, aluminum, electricity or propane are permitted.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Have you read any good books lately?

It is never easy to say goodbye to an old friend, and this time it is a very old friend. That huge, beloved Ponderosa Pine tree next to the road and just down from our yard died this spring.

  • Another adventure: Finding a cutting knife in hay

“It is like trying to find a needle in a haystack” now has a new meaning for me.

Son John is cutting almost waist-high hay in a 10-acre patch, a field just below my house. Suddenly he has a job for me.

He has lost a cutting knife of the mower, and it has to be found before it punctures a tractor tire. All I need to find it is a magnet and possibly a pitchfork.
