  • Palabras Pinturescas: In pre-TV era, election returns arrived on HU campus via radio

One’s five senses would have to be numb to miss the fact that there is an election coming right up. Every candidate for any position in government, whether national, state or local, thinks he/she is the perfect person for the job, the position that is up for election. Most winners will be elated and almost all losers will be sad and angry.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Great-grandson may get to see fresh deer tracks

Whenever I get a chance, and when the weather is bearable, I spend a lot of time outdoors. This mountain ranch is so full of places to explore, of both ancient and recent history and of changing biology, which includes weather patterns. I wonder what I will discover next.

Fortunately our library includes the Field Guide Series by Roger Tory Peterson and these wonderful resource books are dog-eared, well worn treasures that have answered so many of our questions about what we see, hear and even smell here.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: This area has real seasons and unpredictable weather

What a strange beginning, start to our fall season this is. There are no brilliant fall colors showing in our mountains yet.

We are waiting for the first golden leaves to show up and none of us have any idea what will come next, as in what kind of a winter is ahead of us.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Homemade brew almost caused her to choke

September weather can be spectacular, and it surely was an absolutely perfect Sunday after last Sept. 11, when our neighboring community, Pendaries, hosted an area sampling of goods and more at the community center there. This was a real show, taste-and-tell event and we, the public, were asked to sample, visit with the various cooks and vote for our favorite foods.

What could be better than cruising around tables of chiles, salsas and sips of our Mora County wines while visiting with friends and neighbors?
