  • Mora County Notebook: Rocky Raccoon Club formed

The Rincones Presbyterian Credit Union has started  teaching the kindergarten children in Holman about saving. The director, Teresita Vigil and supervisory committee member, Florence Trujillo are directing the program. Trujillo, a licensed teacher, goes to the classrooms once a month to teach the children about saving and helps them get started on their own.

Last Friday Trujillo brought banks for each child. They are in the shape of colorful crayons and each child’s name is printed on his bank.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: The art of cooking with a pressure cooker

Well, I always thought every household owned a pressure cooker, and if you live above 8,000 feet, as I do, you automatically cook beans and so much more in a pressure cooker.

Two different friends and neighbors have asked me about their new found art that they are so afraid of — that dangerous pressure cooker they have never used. Yes, it is still in its box, sadly.

  • St. Gertrude’s holds annual función

Members of the St. Gertrude’s Parish and missions of Mora Valley held their 155th annual función on Sunday honoring St. Gertrude the Great.

Many folks enjoyed the food, games and fellowship of the day.

The day began with a mass at 10 a.m. followed by a procession from the church to the Mora Elementary gymnasium. All of the mission churches followed carrying statues of their patron saints. The saints were then placed in the gym for all to see. After Father James Sanchez offered the prayer and some prayed the rosary dinner was served.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Teaching sweet brother Bill a lesson

The chill in the air is real. In fact, it is downright cold here in the mountains where I live. In the old days, as the old-timers used to say, it is time to butcher that fat steer that has gorged himself daily on expensive feed, only to end up on the ranch family’s dinner plate.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Water tour with the Rotarians

That old adage “water, water everywhere and nary a drop to drink” comes to mind as I review recent events in my busy life. Don’t we wish there was adequate and potable water nearby, as we watch this dry period continue.

I was fortunate, in the right place at the right time sort of thing, when the Rotary Club toured our Gallinas River, Bradner and Peterson Dam water storage areas. Bernadette and Robert, along with councilman Andrew Feldman gave us a cram course in basically what’s right and what’s wrong with Las Vegas water.
