    I am happy to report my “catcher’s mitt” still fits, and no, I did not have to use it. My doctor father always told us he had his catcher’s mitt with him when he delivered a baby, and he did deliver many babies as a country doctor.

  • Valdez selected to travel to leadership forum

    Submitted to the Optic

    Tristen S. Valdez, a student at Mora Middle School, will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in a People to People World Leadership Forum. Valdez, along with fellow students from around the world, will take part in developing leadership skills, learning about times in American history, meet with important leaders and explore current challenges, practice teambuilding skills, and visit national memorials and historic sites.

  • Mora County Notebook - Spanish Spelling Bee winners

    Mora students have held their district Spanish spelling bee and students from Mora County are heading for the state Spanish Spelling Bee on Aril 14 in Albuquerque.

    Sixth grader, Kristen Herrera, granddaughter of Donald and Emma Sanchez, won the first place in Wagon Mound.

    In Mora, Anthony Pino qualified to represent Mora at the state Spanish Spelling Bee.

    The teacher and Bilingual director in Wagon Mound is Georgia Cruz and the teacher in Mora is Rita Sanchez.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Battle with the gates

    Because curiosity is my middle name, I always have to investigate when I hear noises, like making things or repairing things in and around our big shop area. Every ranch has to have a shop and a collection of old junk, just waiting to be ressurrected, to repair something that broke.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora cheer squad does well in competition

    The Mora varsity cheerleading squad performed well at the state spirit competition at the Santa Ana Star Center in Bernalillo on March 23 and 24.

    The cheerleaders were able to compete at the state competition because of their showing in other competitions during the season. At these competitions they took the first place spot twice and one third place.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The snow storms of days gone by

    Where oh where have the big snow of yester year gone? The ranch has recorded 81 inches here so far this year, which is much better than last year, but our annual average is 120 inches, so we have a way to go. We still  have time for a big storm or two, and the high mountains do have enough snow to keep our streams running longer than last year. The acequia watchers monitor this constantly.

  • Mora County Notebook: Residents receive Medals of Valor

    The Mora County Commission meeting last Tuesday was the scene of a special presentation of Medals of Valor and good citizenship, given by Lucas Duran and a representative from the Ledoux, Monte Aplanado, El Carmen Fire Department. Those receiving the awards were: Cindy Aragon, Angelica Aragon, Marcos Mondragon and Alonzo Aragon.
