  • Mora County Notebook: Schools celebrate Dia de la Cultura

Earlier this month, the Mora Independent Schools celebrated Dia de la Cultura with a wonderful program presented by the kindergarten through the middle school classes.
There was a large crowd filling the bleachers in the gym. Chairs were set up on both sides of the floor to accommodate all of the audience. The gym was tastefully decorated with the Hispanic theme.

Behind the performers were black curtains to make a “back stage.” On the curtains were hung sarapes, sombreros, guitars and other mementos of the Hispanic culture.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Lessons learned in tornado country

I think spring in finally here. It is a beautiful May morning and I have just fed some hungry critters. One of our cows gives little milk, so she and her kid are in the corral for a spell, until the baby’s bottle is no longer needed to supplement.

The three old horses need extra hay as well. Their teeth aren’t good, they are “stove up” as old timers would say, and they appreciate any and all handouts now.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Noodles bring up Chinatown memories

I discovered a can of Chow Mein noodles in the dark of my pantry recently. My mother always kept them on hand, should some unexpected guests arrive around the next meal here on the ranch. With some cooked meat, (beef or chicken) some vegetables or some soy sauce, she could whip up a sweet and sour Chinese lunch that anyone would enjoy.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora native opens new practice

Another Mora native has a doctorate.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Life is never simple on a ranch

No two days are ever the same on a ranch. Just about the time I think my life and all that goes with it is slow and calm, my bubble gets busted once again.

Such is the case recently when the clouds built up over our mountains, the temperature dropped like a rock, and before we know it, we had a snow storm of sorts surrounding us.

Now our cows are not dummies, because most of them have babies (calves in ranching terms), they decided they’d better spend the following cold and snowy night in, under our sheds.

  • Mora County Notebook: Chamber holds annual banquet and clean-up

The Mora Chamber of Commerce held its seventh annual banquet on April 20 at the VFW Hall. It was well attended.

The main speaker for this year’s banquet was Dora Dominguez of the New Mexico Economic Development Department.

In addition to Dominguez’s presentation, there was a silent auction with a representation of the work and art of the members. Donations were also made by chamber merchants.

During the banquet, awards were presented to deserving citizens of the community. New members and new businesses were also recognized.
