  • Palabras Pintorescas - Faith in the weather gods

My faith in the weather gods is restored after that big rain — and snow — storm, coming almost on schedule in early May. Hopefully the pattern will continue as La Niña may have dived into the deep of the ocean, for a long time.

Back in the ‘50s when we still lived in Las Vegas and Jim worked for our Public Service Company, he would always plan his vacation time in early May.

  • Mora County Notebook - Students perform for Dia de la Cultura

Cinco de Mayo was celebrated at the school in Mora by a traditional well performed program at the Martinez Gym.

The gym was packed with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other interested folks

The program began at 8:30 a .m. with the children from Head Start and kindergarten. The different classes performed Spanish dances, singing and recitations.

The junior high mariachi band played several numbers to the delight of the appreciative audience. The young people in the band are all from the sixth and seventh grades.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Honoring mothers

May is kicked off with Mother’s Day. Graduations are just around this big day.

I feel my mother’s presence all around me, often, and I suspect she continues to keep a watchful eye on this old ranch.

Mother would be proud of her five grandkids. They have inherited her spunk and spirit genes, as did sweet brother Bill and I.

Our mother was very different, very British, very strict. Bill and I finally figured that out, but not before we tried to get away with all sorts of things.

  • Mora County Notebook - A successful health fair and banquet

The Mora Health Fair was held last Thursday in the Mora High School gym. There were many tables set up to let the public be aware of the many areas of health care that are available to them. Each table had an abundance of literature and “goodies” that included pens, pencils, key chains, bags, note pads and even fly swatters and more. They had their logo or theme on them as part of marketing their health care services.

There were a couple of areas set up so that the people could get their vital signs taken. Advice was given where it was needed.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Neighbors’ Olympic quality dressage horse

Probably one of the most exciting events in a girl’s life is the day she gets her own horse. I’ve been there and done that, more than once. The lessons learned by both horse and rider will last a lifetime, and now a recent story in the Albuquerque Journal brought back another set of horse memories for me.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Surviving the winter and the roasting

Suddenly it is springtime in the Rockies again. And after such a long, cold and windy winter, I wondered if any plant, tree, weed would survive our weather onslaughts.

I am happy to report that our grass is green again, there are buds on our various trees and the lilacs may bloom soon. The early plum blossoms are frozen, but that happens every year here. My calendar has all sorts of dates penciled in.
