Mora County

  • Sharing history though pictures

We just had a fun and educational visit with some interesting folk here at the ranch. I continue to be amazed at how old ranch history just pops up, and this time, the stories were really old.

Peter Welles called me early in the year to find out what was going on at the ranch, and could he and his wife Anita come for a visit in May … of course I said yes! His family built the third log cabin here when my grandfather started our dude ranch business.

  • Mora County Notebook - Farewell to the 2012 graduates

Thirty-eight Mora High students graduated on Friday and are ready to take on the world. It was beautiful evening for the great occasion as parent grandparents and the community gathered to honor their graduates.

The Mora High School band played the processional as the students marched in. The boys had the traditional school colors of green while the girls wore the white gowns.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - What was said in those graduation speeches?

Unless one lives up on Hermit’s Peak as the hermit did so long ago, one can’t help but be aware that graduation time is here.

Yes, I can say I have been there and done that a couple of times.

  • Graduate holds attendance record

Manuel Martinez Jr. had a goal of achieving perfect attendance during his 12 years of schooling.

On his first day of school in the first grade he was so excited to be going to school he said he did not want to miss a day and he did not miss a day in the  years he attended school.

On Friday, Martinez  will graduate from Mora High School and his goal of perfect attendance for the 12 years has been a reality.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Mother wanted windows squeaky-clean

Well, what do you know ... it has happened again. About once a year, always in the late Spring, I sort-of wish I lived in a cave, reason being, it is window washing time again. This isn’t a recent discovery of mine, I might add.

  • Spaghetti dinner huge success

    Submitted to the Optic

Mora Valley Community Health Services held a benefit spaghetti dinner in April to benefit the Senior Center and Ambulance Programs. The event raised $1,655, which will help with operational costs in both programs.

The benefit dinner was organized by the Mora Mountain Mama’s, a women’s group in Mora that dedicates its time to various community issues and organizations. The Mora Mountain Mama’s donated food and time, and MVCHS staff assisted at the event, which was held at the Mora Senior Center.
