    I am lucky! I have friends in many places who consistently keep me informed about going’s on in the big world out there.        

    Many of us are avid readers and we share and promote any good read we encounter. A recent call from a friend down our road told me to hurry down to our favorite bookstore, Tome on the Range, and pick up a copy of “Appetite for America” by Stephen Fried.

  • Mora County Notebook: Sen. Tom Udall visits Mora Valley

    Mora was included in Senator Tom Udall’s small business and Economic Development Tour  recently. He toured eight New Mexico counties in the first week of the April.

    He visited two projects in the Mora County. He visited La Jicarita Rural Telephone Cooperative and the Mora National Fish Hatchery on Tuesday as they serve as economic development engines for the community.

    La Jicarita manager Michael J.Leyba gave him and his staff a tour of the new telephone cooperative building. The new offices are now up and running serving the constituents of the area.

    6 a.m. - Mora High School Professional Business of America leave for trip to Washington, DC. for national competition.

    I continue to find interesting and  historical writings and newspaper columns in my family's collection of stuff. My parents were great friends of Walter and Delma Vivian. Walter was the editor of the Optic in 1950, and his wife, Delma was a talented reporter for the paper.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Oh, how the times have changed

    My collection of old family files is fascinating and now I realize how much I regret not taking a history class or two from Dr. Lynn Perrigo at Highlands so long ago. I’d advise any student in school now to make time, room, for at least an overview class on area history. You will never regret it!

    I just read a March 1937 copy of the State of New Mexico Department of Game and Fish brochure.

  • Mora County Notebook: Mora Chamber holds annual banquet

    The VFW Hall was the scene of a gala affair on Saturday evening as many guest and dignitaries gather to hold the annual Chamber banquet and awards night. There was also an auction of items donated by different organizations and members.

    The Master of Ceremonies was State Representative Thomas Garcia and Mora Schools Superintendent. He opened the gathering by welcoming the guests and introducing the dignitaries present.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Walking down memory lane

    I continue to enjoy the walk down memory lane with Joseph Baca and jesus Lopez on KFUN on Monday. One thing leads to another with these talk shows, and recently they listed the many “Mom and Pop” grocery stores we used to have there. Yes, that was the term used to describe them at the time.
