  • Palabras Pintorescas - Meat processing plant to help area ranchers

Back in the old days of not-so-long-ago I could plan a whole afternoon of strictly quiet and pleasant time working on and researching my next column. That was because it was raining and I was housebound, for lack of a better term. No such rainy afternoons are in the immediate forecast, which is surely not good.

  • Mora County Notebook - Two camps held during the same week

Two special summer camps were held during the week of July 15 to July 22.

They were the  Mora Valley Baptist Church Vacation Bible School and the Presbyterians Loma Verde Junior Camp.

The Mora Valley Baptist Church held their yearly Vacation Bible School. The bible school was a huge success under the leadership of Pastor Evodio Rios and the volunteers of the local church members and the youth of Whiteface Baptist Church in Whiteface, Texas.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The troubles with sleeping comfortably

Some very unusual and strange cries in the middle of the night recently kept me awake for a while, and got me to thinking. We take so much for granted in our lives, don’t we? As we sleep comfortably and well, we rarely think about how and what we sleep on. The cries I heard were that of a baby elk searching for its mother, incidentally. It took me a while to figure that one out!

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora celebrates annual fiesta

The Mora Fiesta was held last weekend with the usual happy crowd. On Friday evening, it started with a Mass as this is La Fiesta de Santiago y Santa Anna.

After the mass folks gathered at the American Legion Pavilion for the dance and crowning of the queen. The Agua Negra Band played at the dance. The Fiesta Queen is April Gallegos, daughter of David and Mellisa Gallegos
Saturday morning, the festivities began with a political breakfast which was attended by political officers and those running for office and many people who came to greet them. It was well attended.

  • Miranda Serna Basketball Camp a great success

    By Jeannie Abeyta
    For the Optic

The Coach Miranda Serna Basketball Camp held July 16-18, was a success! A total of 60 participants enjoyed instruction on basketball skills, motivational talks, games and prizes.

Guest speakers were Fidel Trujillo and coaches Mark Cassidy and Andres Valdez. Camp staff who volunteered their time and knowledge came from several states and cities, but all have roots in Mora. Camp coaches had close ties to Serna, either as family or a friend and love her and the sport of basketball.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - My passion for reading both the old and new

You, my readers, know my passion for reading and books — books of all sorts and kinds. I recently spent a couple of hours deep into my father’s dog-eared copy of his 1982 edition of the Merck Manual, considered the bible of medical information by many in the health seeking/curing field. Yes, that 30-year-old book is still timely in many ways, and Doc’s notes make it even better.

  • It’s fiesta time for Mora County

    Las Vegas Optic Staff

The schedule may have changed from one weekend to another but the fun and excitement won’t, as the 2012 Mora Fiesta promises to again be its usual good time for all who attend.

This year’s lineup includes a rodeo on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the crowning of this year’s queen, a Saturday morning parade and more than a dozen performers and bands carrying the sounds of the fiesta through the weekend.
