    One would say it is a dog’s life on this old ranch, but it is also a horse’s life, to be sure. Our horses are mostly retired, are fat and sassy, and roam around a small pasture at ranch headquarters. Quite a picture of happiness, I’d say.

  • Dr. Mario Leyba is another Mora native

    Surgeon Mario Leyba is another Mora native who has done great things with his life.

    Mora can be proud of yet another young man who grew up in the Mora Valley, went to school here and recently served as the commencement speaker at his alma mater.

    Leyba was the oldest of three children. He has a brother and a sister who both work at the Las Vegas Behavioral Health Institute.

    Leyba gets his versatility from his mother, Bernice Leyba.

    “She taught me everything I know,” he says.

  • Mora Youth Hunter Education Club competes

    Submitted to the Optic

    The Mora Youth Hunter Education Club competed in the New Mexico championship last weekend.  

    Eight events were contested, marksmanship competition in small-bore, archery, shot gun and muzzleloader, and responsibility competitions in orienteering with map and compass, wildlife identification, safety trail and a written exam on game laws and related information.  

    Even with the exam finished Friday evening, it took from 7 a.m. until nearly 6 p.m. Saturday to complete the courses.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Not missing a beat in global events

    Apparently I didn't miss anything in the way of global events recently. Our mountains are still here, dry as they are. If the end of the world happened, nobody noticed it around here.

    Sadly, it is so dry very few flowers are blooming, so the resident hummingbirds have hit the feeders hard. There is almost no water running in our creeks, and the blue herons quickly cleaned out any trout that still had a small pool to swim in.

  • Mora County Notebook: Joshua Garcia receives prestigious scholarship

    Joshua Garcia and six other northern New Mexico recipients were honored at a luncheon this month where they received the Pete Domenici Scholarship funded by Los Alamos National Laboratory.

    Garcia, son of John and Ann Garcia, is a 2011 graduate of Mora High School. At the luncheon recipients had a chance to sit and visit with Domenici.

    The students selected for the scholarship were chosen because of their outstanding academic achievement as well as outstanding leadership skills and community service.

  • A math wizard — Willie Sanchez

    A recent KFUN radio program that Jesus Lopez hosts had an old friend of mine as a guest. Willie Sanchez and I were students at New Mexico Highlands University together a long time ago.

    This was the early 1950s when our veterans from both World War II and the Korean conflict returned and went to school via the G.I. Bill. They came to get a good and useful education so they could move on with their lives. Some of us younger students didn’t have the same work and study habits they had. In other words, they came to get an education and they had little time to goof off.
