  • Palabras Pintorescas: Tapaderos: Those funny-looking stirrup covers

I was surprised to see the host of Antiques Roadshow, Mark Wahlberg, introduce a recent segment by riding a horse, no less. He also visited a museum where valuable old Mexican saddles were on exhibit.

It is easy for me to think that everybody knows how and why a saddle works the way it does. It is built to protect both the horse and the rider and when used properly can save a lot of problems, from the saddle sores on the horses back to a real wreck when a cinch breaks and the riders and saddle land on the ground.

  • Promotional video shot at spinning mill

The Mora Valley Spinning Mill will soon be featured in New Mexico True promotional videos. Recently, Patricia Antelles and Melinda Hess of Convivial Design Inc. visited the mill, located in the heart of Mora, to capture footage for the video.

Some of the footage recorded included various shots of the woven rugs, the wool-to-yarn manufacturing process, and the coffee bar.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Gascon: The heart of snow country

There is a cloudless sky overhead, and it is a bright 55 day in mid February as I write this. Yes, it is too warm, too sunny, and the snowpack melts quickly. That is not good news here.

However, I have just discovered a weather story in one of my very old newspapers. This is from the 1939, February edition of the monthly “Valmora Sun.” published by our tuberculosis patients who were “taking the cure” there, with my doctor father, Carl Gallenthien, where I was born and raised.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: A sweet, gooey and chocolatey Valentine’s treat

Yes, I’ve told this story before, but it so appropriate for Valentine’s Day that I thought it should be repeated. This is our favorite Valentine, made by our two little boys a long time ago.

Our boys, Carl and John, rode the school bus to Sapello every day. They were home by mid-afternoon and always had chores to do (a blessing when one lives on the ranch, but they did not think so.)

  • Board incumbents Sena, Lujan out

Mora School Board incumbents Robert Sena and Vanee Lujan were defeated in Tuesday’s election. While current board chair George Trujillo was re-elected to his seat in a three-way race.

Voters also defeated the general obligation school bond question by 158 votes.

Dennis Romero took down Sena for the Position 3 seat with Romero garnering 439 votes to Sena’s 405. Melissa Cordova came in third in that race with 379 votes.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Higgins, an amazing water witcher

Yes, January was a good wet weather month. Our Gascon weather station recorded 30 inches of show and 1.50 inches of moisture here last month. These snows have melted slowly, which will hopefully seep more water into our fast-depleting aquifers.

Thankfully I kept a column from the April 2, 2012, issue about witching for water. The writer, Tom McDonald, detailed at length the amazing ability Salvadore Higgins has as a Water Witcher.
