  • Palabras Pintorescas: Alphabet cards created skillfully, but by whom?

My friends know how unorganized I am, but once in a while I actually discover something that was put where it belonged. This time, Yes—it does happen... I noticed some folders or something of that nature in a bookshelf totally devoted to children’s books. I must say I don’t get into that bookcase often now because I don’t have small children nearby, in my family now.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Edith, Ruth and Charlie left us too soon

December can be a sad month for many of us. Both of my parents died Christmas week a long time ago. And this year a lot of us lost some very special people who impacted our lives in many and varied ways.

I still can’t believe there were three funerals in just five days last month: Edith Moore, Ruth Fort and Charlie Hillis.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Let’s bring back annual ‘Rails and Trails’ days

Distracted should be my middle name. This time I am looking through a box of old papers (mostly newspapers) and I find a copy of “The Valmora Sun” a monthly newspaper published by the tuberculosis patients at my old home, Valmora.

This April 1939 copy has a historically fun advertisement on the back page.

It is a full page ad (larger than 11 by 13) that reads: “Announcing... The First Annual American Legion Cowboy’s Reunion).

  • Mora County Notebook - 2014 is one for the history books

The year 2014 will go down in the history books of Mora County. Several people attended nationwide conferences and the sports programs did well against their peers this past year. It was a year that many will remember from homecoming in January to the annual fiestas in July.

There were good times and times of grief this past year.

In 2014, the county lost two wonderful individuals who had strong impacts for generations of Mora residents.
