  • Palabras Pintorescas: ‘Flower Children’ became educated, responsible

My aged copy of the Chicago Daily News, dated Aug. 18, 1970, had a headline story about the many hippie communes that had sprung up in Northern New Mexico. Last week’s column quoted from this story, and I think yet another column should be written about our own experiences with these foreigners, mostly young adults, who came from a city environment and who thought they could just live off the land in this rugged part of New Mexico.

The commune that took over the meadow at the high end of Morphy Canyon was right across from our north line fence.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Some people feed bears just for the photo op

So there I was, visiting with my Optic compadres, friends when suddenly the whole press and production staff flew out the front door. Someone shouted “There’s a bear in the tree” and there was a bear in a tree, across the tree, in a big fir tree. The game wardens tranquilized him, and turned him loose in distant mountains.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Hippies of ‘70s found life harsh in wilderness

A friend came by to borrow a book from my overloaded bookcase in my living room. There was an aged newspaper clipping in the book, so I sent the book home with him and I finally decided to check out this bit of newspaper memorabilia.

The book is from my parents’ collection and from my big Valmora house bookshelf, a sort of timeline about New Mexico history.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: North of Dalbey was just pasture

Seems as how when I happen to visit with folks I know here, around our Las Vegas, they have opinions. Opinions about our Meadow City and its growth or decline, depending on how one defines the life or possibly the decline of a town.

Sixty years ago, big boss Jim and I lived on Dalbey Drive for a year or so, until we could move into the house we were building out near Montezuma. What an experience that was, particularly for me! I grew up in the Valmora Sanatorium hospital complex, with three meals a day served in the big dining room there.
