  • Palabras Pinturescas: Book explores Las Vegas history

What a fun time this is for me? Joseph A. Lordi’s brand new book, “Las Vegas New Mexico” became available here in Las Vegas at about the time I celebrated my recent birthday. Thank you, friends and family for the gift cards, and yes, I have a copy of this incredible book.

It will take me a long time to devour it. This is not just another traveling log or history book about this area. It is a big book in many ways! It weights about 6 pounds and has 416 pages of photographs and text.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Time seems to go quicker as you get older

I continue to be amazed at how quickly time flies, the older one gets. And even with this seemingly rapid passage of time, I do always take time to stop and smell the roses, as they say.

So! One thing leads to another and after being reminded that it is time to get a flu shot (among other things), I elected to take the morning off and visit my favorite county seat, Mora for more than one reason. I wanted to vote early, and I needed to renew my driver’s license. That means I visited our Mora County Courthouse. And no, sadly, it is not a courthouse.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: Never underestimate power of mountain gusts

Oh my! Those voracious March winds decided to pay us a visit here at the ranch in October. And to my amazement there are still some brilliant golden aspen leaves in the forest higher up. And, a 70 degrees this late October makes me wonder what winter will bring.

My grandfather Brown bought this homestead from Marie Dunn, a widow, in 1921. The Dunns had planted two crabapple trees in the front yard by our beautiful two-story house.

  • Palabras Pinturescas: In pre-TV era, election returns arrived on HU campus via radio

One’s five senses would have to be numb to miss the fact that there is an election coming right up. Every candidate for any position in government, whether national, state or local, thinks he/she is the perfect person for the job, the position that is up for election. Most winners will be elated and almost all losers will be sad and angry.
