The calendar says it is fall. That means it should be getting cold, and the winds (and hopefully, storms) of winter should not be far behind. Many of us are securing a stack of firewood, often between baling the last of the hay fields that produced just average yields this year.

  • Another year coming to a close at the market

Mora’s Farmers’ Market has been very successful this summer. When it started in July the vendors had fresh lettuce, radishes and other early vegetables. People came to get the fresh produce that was home grown. It was picked fresh the day of market and cleaned and ready for use. They honor WIC and food stamps now.

  • The Masonic Lodge and the Rainbow Girls

I continue to be amazed at how fast time flies, particularly when I get into area history. This was brought home to me just last week  when I learned that the Chapman Lodge Number 2 of the Masonic Lodge in Las Vegas will soon be 99 years old. Yes, it is still active and does much for our community.

  • Wagon Mound school building dedicated

    Submitted by the Optic

The Wagon Mound School community gathered earlier this month to witness the naming and dedication of the Wagon Mound Public School Administration building in honor of two long-time educators, Zack and Eloisa Montoya.

  • Mora County Notebook - The life and work of one of Mora’s patriots

Amadeo Padilla was a well-known Mora barber. His shop still stands across the street from Pacheco Oil and Gas in downtown Mora. It is the red building with a tree growing in front of it now. For years it was the place to go to get your hair cut and have a nice chat with Padilla while he worked. Many people did not know about his background but he was well-known  for his skill in making men look neat and well-trimmed.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Cramming a visit into a day in proper fashion

A recent advice column that I read in some publication (I read all sorts of stuff!) addresses the proper way one is supposed to be and do as an overnight houseguest.

The writer of that column may have had my very recent houseguests as her models when she wrote the column.
