Congressman Ben Ray Luján visited the Mora Valley late last week, and he got an earful from residents on controversial issues like the closing of rural post offices and drilling. The event, which included heated discussions on controversial issues, took place at the David Cargo Library in Mora last Thursday.    

The main problems that concerned the citizens present were the closing of the rural post offices, drilling in Mora County, health insurance issues, unemployment problems in the rural area and gun control.

The twists and turns of living in one place for a very long time make for interesting searches and research.

Daughter Sherry is making photo journals for my granddaughters — we all should do this — and therefore, I needed to dig through those proverbial boxes of very old photographs. What a fun time that always is!
So many of the family photos were taken by our busy mothers. They decided to record some event for history, thankfully, and the sometimes poorly lit, posed picture records so much more than they probably realized at the time.

At the age of 88, the Rev. John McHugh continues to serve as a priest at St.Gertrude’s Church in Mora and the outlying mission churches. He served as a priest at different places for a combined 58 years.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., on Aug. 9, 1923, McHugh moved to Oklahoma City with his family when he was 5. He had one sister, Mary Lee. They attended school at Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City. He attended St.Gregory’s High School in Shawnee, Okla., and then spent a year studying at Oklahoma University.
