  • Palabras Pintorescas - The dieting regimen back at the ranch

Yes, winter has arrived in our mountains. The days are short, The temperature rarely gets to 40 degrees in the warmest part of the day, and it is cold to colder at night, often below zero. The folks who predicted a warm winter missed their mark I’d say. Global warming hasn’t hit here yet.

I gave up on making New Year resolutions a long time ago.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Stopping Nancy in her horseshoe tracks

The very large windows in my house give me a vantage point. I can really just watch the world go by, and by some standards that might be judged as a big waste of time.

One day last week I watched our now retired Betsy mare do her darndest to rearrange a particular small area of her pasture so she could roll in comfort. She pawed the snow and underlying grass in a circle, spinning and turning until she thought she had it about right. She used her right front hoof for this. Then she carefully lay down in this circle and rolled and rolled.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Starting the New Year with good ol’ fruitcake

Don’t look now, but ... there is a second chapter in the story / column I wrote about fruitcakes. Yes, I know some family members might call me the original fruitcake  because I write about such nonsensical things, but what do they know!

The day the fruitcake column was published,  my neighbors just down the road near Sapello appeared at my door with a real, packed-in-that-tin fruitcake, made by the monks at Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, Va., no less.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - For the love of books — about our state

Oh my! I love it when a book finds me, in a somewhat circuitous route, I might add. In other words, Santa has a way of finding us, I’ve learned for the Nth time in my life.
A big part of the fun of writing this column is delivering my typewritten columns to the Optic staff every week. I was surprised recently when the kids there told me I had a package or an envelope waiting for me. Oh, my again! The package contained a signed copy of “Las Vegas, New Mexico, Volume II” by Joseph Lordi, with a note tucked into the signed copy.
