MSgt. Andres Pacheco was honored at his 85th birthday at K-Bob’s Restaurant in Las Vegas on Saturday.

He was accompanied by his family and many relatives. They came from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Bernalillo, Albuquerque and Las Vegas. There were 54 adults and quite a few children.

The party was enjoyed by everyone.

Pacheco served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and has been retired for 33 years. His service took him to the wars in Vietnam and Korea besides the time he spent in the United States and elsewhere.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Valmora delegation active during reunion

A year ago this picture would have been just another photograph I’d glance at as I sorted through a stack of very old black and white photos. It is actually printed on a postcard, and the printed wording on the front of it says: “Valmora Delegation, Cowboy’s Reunion, Las Vegas, N Mex.” “Malaney photo” is written on the lower corner.

  • Mora County Notebook - Schools celebrate homecoming in style

Last week was a great fun week for the staff and students of Mora  Schools. They had many different activities during their “Spirit Week.” The students dressed up and got points for their class.

Monday was Pajama, hip hop or ‘90s day; Tuesday was Western or Crazy hair day.

Wednesday was Old day or Baby day. On Thursday, there was a pep rally at 1 p.m. and a talent show for the court candidates at 6 p.m. Thursday was Toga day or hippie day.
It was announced at the game that the seniors got the most points.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Then there was light once again

Flip a switch and wow! The lights are on! We rarely give a thought of any kind about just what it takes to keep those lights on, do we? I got to watch a nuts-and-bolts work order carried out right here in my own back yard recently.

  • Prevention program set to expand

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The changing times of the ranching business

In the “something old is something new again” I have a Jan. 25, 1990 copy of “Livestock Weekly,” the newspaper any in-the-know rancher needed to read back then. Son John discovered it stashed away in our shop. And about the same time a friend and neighbor gave me a copy of an article written about the fate of the current cattle rancher in Texas Monthly.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora native serving in Africa

A young woman who was born and grew up in Mora is now serving in the Peace Corps in Mozambique, Africa.

Andrea Martinez, 24, has been assigned to the Catholic mission in Dombe. She is working as a librarian and teacher.

Martinez will be serving there for two years. She had brushed up on her French, thinking that she would be assigned to a French-speaking country.

But when she was assigned to Mozambique, where the native language is Portuguese, she had to switch gears.
