  • Palabras Pintorescas - Then there was light once again

Flip a switch and wow! The lights are on! We rarely give a thought of any kind about just what it takes to keep those lights on, do we? I got to watch a nuts-and-bolts work order carried out right here in my own back yard recently.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The changing times of the ranching business

In the “something old is something new again” I have a Jan. 25, 1990 copy of “Livestock Weekly,” the newspaper any in-the-know rancher needed to read back then. Son John discovered it stashed away in our shop. And about the same time a friend and neighbor gave me a copy of an article written about the fate of the current cattle rancher in Texas Monthly.

  • Mora County Notebook - Mora native serving in Africa

A young woman who was born and grew up in Mora is now serving in the Peace Corps in Mozambique, Africa.

Andrea Martinez, 24, has been assigned to the Catholic mission in Dombe. She is working as a librarian and teacher.

Martinez will be serving there for two years. She had brushed up on her French, thinking that she would be assigned to a French-speaking country.

But when she was assigned to Mozambique, where the native language is Portuguese, she had to switch gears.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Sweet Bill isn’t a figment of my imagination

I’ve discovered a few of my readers think my sweet brother Bill is a figment of my imagination. And some of my friends want to see a picture of Bill. My editor, Mercy, asked me a while ago if I had any photographs to go along with a story. Well, the indoor jobs when it is so cold caused me to dig out an old box of pictures, and there it was! A Kodak moment with sweet brother Bill, no less.

  • Mora County Notebook - New sanctuary under construction

The Mount Calvary Assembly of God Church in Mora is building a new sanctuary. It is located beside their old sanctuary and community rooms.

The congregation saw the need for a larger sanctuary to accommodate their growing congregation and for their use when they have special occasions such as funerals and weddings.

The church’s pastor Daniel Enriquez stated that the sanctuary will be 76 feet long and 38 feet wide.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Three friends who no longer have to worry

The calendar says it’s January 15th, and that translates into a very cold start to our new year. It was 12 degrees below zero last night, and it is 15 degrees above zero as I write this. Mark Twain noted that he never knew water could make a river so beautiful. I could paraphrase that with “ I never knew below zero temperatures for a long period of time could make ice so hard.” Yes our creeks are almost frozen solid and running water is hard to find.
