  • Mora County Notebook - Organizations working to improve park

Morphy Lake State Park is usually booming during the summer months, but in the winter it is quiet, as ducks can be seen gently floating across the calm chilly water.

For numerous Mora County farmers the park means a way to store water that will be used to irrigate their fields during the growing season. The winter months are crucial to the farmers as the moisture is needed in the spring and summer.

But there is a slight problem.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Moberg garage could fix just about anything

I have an audience of one as I write this column on Nov. 17. It is 10:30 in the morning and it has warmed up to 32 degrees. It was 1 degree at 8 this morning and there are 7 to 8 inches of snow on the ground. The snow has finally melted off the deck railing and because it is iron it is obviously the only warm perch around here at the moment.

My visitor is a very cold mourning dove. Her feathers are fluffed out to the maximum, and she is watching the houseflies that have suddenly come alive and are crawling up the picture windows here.

The Mora Rough Riders 4-H club gathered last Saturday at the Mora VFW to end their year with an annual banquet. As a youth development program, the 4-H organization can be found in almost every school community. By supporting youth from elementary school through high school with programs and hands-on activities, the 4-H club is designed to engage them in science, citizenship and healthy living.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Praises for old ‘Victorian Gazette’

It is fun to have new folks move into our area. I know from having guests here at the ranch for so many years, that all who come seem to be curious about this big area of New Mexico.

It is no secret. When both individuals and tour groups come our way, they ask questions, walk our streets, read our signs and want more information. One good source of local and regional information is our Citizen’s Committee for Historic Preservation.

  • Mora County Notebook - Moberg’s garage and towing celebrates 50th anniversary

    Submitted to the Optic

Ernie Moberg celebrated 50 years in business earlier this month with friends and family at his shop in Watrous. His brother and sister were able to come all the way from Minnesota to celebrate with him.

The celebration include barbecued elk and a huge triple flavored cake. A hilarious roast reminisced about the many injuries Moberg has survived and his friend, Randy Huston, sang a special song for him titled “Lucky.”

  • Where the bad bugs find their targets

And now Gascon Point has a dusting of snow, which will probably be gone in a day or two, and thankfully there are no “vote for me” election ads in the various media outlets. This includes radio, television, and newspapers, plus signs in some really strange places. Many of us voted early, and no, none of use voted often as some might surmise. And I do continue to remind my family and friends of the importance of voting. Just visit a foreign country for a week or two and one will understand. Voting is a privilege.
