  • Mora County Notebook: Schools busy with homecoming festivities

Mora Schools are celebrating their homecoming. The results of the homecoming game and royalty will not be known until after the Friday Optic has gone to press. So we will have to wait for that until next week.

In the meantime the school is gearing up for a great week looking forward to seeing many of its alumni coming home for the big occasion.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The lovely photos of the past

Surprise of surprises for me, when I turn to page 52 in New Mexico Magazine and discover a photograph of my parents, the Gellenthiens, in the Feb. 2012 issue. This is yet another very good issue of the magazine in that the photography alone is spectacular.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The growing years of Carl and Coyote

When a bunch of ranchers get together, no matter the occasion, the discussions are always lively. My most recent encounter with my longtime rancher friends was at Geraldine Huston’s memorial service. This was a very sad event, but she would have loved the homemade foods and strong coffee served at lunch afterward. Geri was one of many longtime ranching wives from this area.

  • An adventure to the South Pole

Lorraine Hurtado, a Chacon resident, spent a season in Antarctica. She went on  the advice of her nephew Andres Martinez, son of Phil and her sister Mary Ann. Andres has worked at the South Pole for 12 years. He is an engineer. He helped build the facility.
Lorraine wanted to get out and have a new adventure away from her home and familiar surroundings for a while. She had lost her husband of 52 years and needed a change.

  • Cowgirl apparel and calendars

I was the happy recipient of some fabulous calendars this year. The Muench Colorado photography calendar brought back so many memories of our visits to this picturesque state. Viva Colorado, as they say, and I could take the same spectacular mountain snow scenes right here from my yard as I write this.
