  • Mora County Notebook - Seed exchange welcomes spring

Spring is really here now; at least the Mora Growers are planning on it, as they held their first annual seed exchange and workshop on Saturday at the meeting room at Tapetes de Lana in Mora.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered to exchange ideas, seeds and friendship.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Spring: My favorite time of the year

Springtime automatically brings up thoughts of new life and babies in particular. On this old ranch it is calving time and that is a favorite time for me.

My father doctor always said, “Put on the catcher’s mitt, but never interfere with Mother Nature unless there is obvious trouble with the birthing process.” How right he was, and he caught lots of babies in his 60 years of his private practice at Valmora.

  • Mora County Notebook - The beauty of the valley

Mora County goes from high mountains to rolling plains.

Every season brings scenes of beauty and thrills.

A sunrise and sunset that show beautiful colorful clouds is seen often. When the snow covers the ground and clings to the trees it brings people out with their cameras to share with friend in photo albums, Facebook and just to share from the modern cameras.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Enjoying the great outdoors safely

When scanning the skies, following the resident red tail hawk, I always have to pull out the binoculars and check out Gascon Point. The snow pack will provide some much needed runoff. But there should be deep drifts everywhere and sadly, I don’t see many.  But ... we still have time for a big snow storm or two.

Speaking of our wilderness, I discovered an old pamphlet put out by the southwest region of our U.S. Forest Service. The 10 “Wilderness use Hints” are timely, even if the publication is aged.

  • Mora County Notebook - Director of non-profit speaks to club

Anita Marie Moss, the director of the non-profit UpCycle program was the speaker for the last Mora Mountain Mamas meeting held at Pizza Pro in Mora. Moss brought samples of the garments made by the women in the organization.

She told the group about the program that is helping the women in the area create unique fashions in a home industry. This green program saves the environment in the fact that discarded clothing that would be filling the landfill is put to use to help the women make extra money.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - Remembering the train tracks and travels

I happened to be in the right place at the right time when the noon train to California zipped by our Las Vegas railroad station. This passenger train used to be called the Chief. And there used to be four passenger trains that went from Chicago to Las Angeles daily on our beloved Santa Fe railroad.

  • Mora County Notebook - Students show support for Red Cross

Mora Elementary Student Government sponsored a “Dig in your Pocket” drive to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The students from elementary, middle school and high school did dig in their pockets to raise the amount of $401.19 to help those who are suffering as a result of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast.

The Mora Student Government students presented the check to Joan Maestas, the local American Red Cross volunteer recently.

Maestas informed the group that the local chapter of the Red Cross is in desperate need of volunteers.
