  • Mora County Notebook - Middle school students attend law camp

Two Lazaro Garcia Middle School students recently returned from a week at University of New Mexico Law Camp. They were thrilled and excited with the experiences they had during the week. They stayed on campus all week. The program and expenses was funded by the Hispanic Bar Association.

Krystah Pacheco, daughter of Jessyka Sanchez, and Amiree Olivas, daughter of John and Pam Olivas, qualified to attend the camp. They both had to have high grades and write an essay, in addition to having to be recommended by various people.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Surprises of all sorts here at the ranch

Surprises show up in all sorts of different ways around here. I am the happy recipient of “Death Comes Quickly,” Susan Witting Albert’s newest “who-dunnit” book in her China Bayles mystery series. This book is number 23 in the series, and I have read all of them. Susan and Bill Albert are our part-time neighbors who have a home in Pendaries.

At the annual meeting of the Agua Pura Water Association at Chacon the long time operator and board member, Estevan Sanchez, who has recently retired, was honored by the board and the community members of Chacon. • Palabras Pintorescas: Memorial in honor of our beloved Harrington

The almost last day in May brought a happy and yet somewhat sad event our way. John Harrington, for whom our great Mora tree research center is named, was acknowledged yet again right down our road, at Pendaries.

None of us who knew Harrington have forgotten him, and often when any of us are out in our woods, our mountains, we stop to salute him and all he did for this large area, and the whole state, for that matter.

  • Mora County Notebook - 4-H club visits and plants a garden

On Sunday afternoon the Mora Rough Riders 4- H Club took part in the Headwaters Community Garden, sponsored by the Mora Presbyterian Church. The 4-H- ers ages 5 to 19   planted seeds in a plot of the Presbyterian Community Garden. They were doing a community service project. The plot that they worked on belongs to the Presbyterian Church and the produce raised on it will supply food for the Food Pantry.

They dug the rows to plant their seeds. They planted pumpkins, beans, squash and corn. They then watered the area.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Rains have turned the brown fields green again

What a treat it is to have our climate change back to what is was like in the old days. Rains in just the nick of time have turned the brown fields green again, and wildflowers have begun to bloom once again. The hummingbirds finally have something other than our sugar water to enjoy.
