  • Palabras Pintorescas: Sage advice: Stay calm, reflect, be full of life

What a way to start the day! Every pond is full of water, grasses and wildflowers are bursting from the ground, and the mountain streams are flowing bank to bank. Almost four inches of rain in May is incredible in so many ways. And our Gascon point gets frequent snow showers. That tells me it is still cold and colder the higher one goes. I continue to remind the newcomers to this area that this is the way may used to be. We still don’t know whether our apple trees will have fruit because nights are still pushing the freezing mark up here.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Never underestimate the power of a lightning bolt

Summer is almost here, even though our mountains have had several late snow storms in May, no less. And, the newspapers, radio and television have had some disturbing news lately.

Back in the day, quite a while ago, we tuned in to KFUN radio because that really was the only source for daytime news in the country where we lived.

If there was a fire burning in the area, the radio station would immediately let us know where it was. That ultimately had to end because too many folks showed up, mostly just to look.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: ‘Flower Children’ became educated, responsible

My aged copy of the Chicago Daily News, dated Aug. 18, 1970, had a headline story about the many hippie communes that had sprung up in Northern New Mexico. Last week’s column quoted from this story, and I think yet another column should be written about our own experiences with these foreigners, mostly young adults, who came from a city environment and who thought they could just live off the land in this rugged part of New Mexico.

The commune that took over the meadow at the high end of Morphy Canyon was right across from our north line fence.
