  • Mora County Notebook - 4-H club visits and plants a garden

On Sunday afternoon the Mora Rough Riders 4- H Club took part in the Headwaters Community Garden, sponsored by the Mora Presbyterian Church. The 4-H- ers ages 5 to 19   planted seeds in a plot of the Presbyterian Community Garden. They were doing a community service project. The plot that they worked on belongs to the Presbyterian Church and the produce raised on it will supply food for the Food Pantry.

They dug the rows to plant their seeds. They planted pumpkins, beans, squash and corn. They then watered the area.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Rains have turned the brown fields green again

What a treat it is to have our climate change back to what is was like in the old days. Rains in just the nick of time have turned the brown fields green again, and wildflowers have begun to bloom once again. The hummingbirds finally have something other than our sugar water to enjoy.

There were many proud parents’ grand- parents cheering them on as they received their diploma/certificate. The next week the Head Start held its graduation ceremony on May 22 with 45 students graduating and again a full gym of parents and well-wishers.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Old brochure touts beauties of El Porvenir

Summer is almost here. Our mountain folk welcome the warmer weather, and for many of us that translates  into vacation. Because I grew up on a dude ranch here at Gascon,   I know what summer and vacations mean.

The rush would be on as reservations came in, mostly by letter. The log cabins had to be cleaned, with nine months of dirt and dust swept out. Horses had to be shod, saddles and tack repaired, and our storerooms filled with groceries.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Never run out of stories

My fellow columnist, Art Trujillo, recently asked me if I ever ran out of ideas, stories I can write about. Obviously, the answer is “no” because things just pop up in my life and that reminds me of yet another tall tale or story.
