  • Palabras Pintorescas: Sweet Brother Bill’s 10 rules

This column could be called a hodge-podge of somewhat newsworthy items, or just what’s left in the Easter basket after yet another rite and celebration of spring.

I start with a weather report...no surprise there. Our mountain winter started in November with the first measurable snows here at our weather bureau reporting station, unless we get a big storm here in April, we will have recorded 86 inches of snow with a melt down in moisture content of 7-1/2 inches.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Highlands students in ‘50s lacked those fancy gadgets

A recent Western Horsemen magazine’s cover features a very good looking horse’s head and the feature story (obviously) is: “Look Him in the Eye.” The gist of the story is — by looking him or her in the eye one can gauge the expression. This not-so-new idea pertains to almost all of our animal kingdom.

My question is: How do I know what you are thinking? How are you aware of your immediate surroundings? and When do you ever look up, kid (and many adults) as you bury your face, look into that electronic instrument you are communicating with?

  • Palabras Pintorescas: CWriter has a compulsive book-buying gene

Oh, My... what a fun party that was! In case you missed it, Tito and Mary Chavez celebrated 30 busy, fun and full years of being in Las Vegas very recently. Tito’s creative jewelery and Mary’s keen eye when it comes to showing off very good art is so obvious when one walks into their shop on our Bridge Street here. And as I write this, Tito is working on a very special project for me. He has vision far beyond mine when it comes to creativity!
