  • Palabras Pintorescas: Getting out of the ranch and heading to Seattle

  • Cleveland Roller Mill focus of this month’s talk

    Submitted to the Optic

For nearly 100 years the economy of the Mora Valley thrived on farming and milling as the primary source of grain and flour for much of the Western United States.

The Cleveland Roller Mill, constructed near the turn of the century would become one of the largest and most successful mills built during this period, and would continue to operate until its closing in 1940. Today, the three story adobe flour mill operates as a museum dedicated to the rich past of farming and milling on which this place once thrived.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: ‘Caming’ and ‘wenting’ cause of great ruckus

Books have a way of showing up here when I least expect them, and my friends know I like to read and I also like to paint word pictures as well. A recent addition to my reading list is “Welcome to Querecho Flats” by Curt Brummett. What a fun book this is! Brummett is a humorous writer with a gift for painting word pictures, and this book has numerous short stories about his home and where he lives.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Kroening was a tough cowboy

I  have discovered becoming a senior citizen isn’t all that bad. So many things pop up around here, and almost every event begins with “Do you remember...” Yes, very often I can answer, “Yes, I do.”

I suspect this Cowboys Reunion Optic will carry a story about Cowboys and cowgirls from way back — as in the 1950s or earlier.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: A fort built in the middle of tall hay crops

The storms of summer and the warm weather brings on incredible plant growth, as in both weeds and hay crops. Our hay meadow just across from our front gate has timothy hay that is higher than the fence and the gate as I write this. The seed pods on all of the grasses, and weeds are huge as well. That translates into good winter feed for many animals, and reseeding where it has almost become barren in some places here in our mountains.
