  • Palabras Pintorescas: Sweet brother Bill and his goat, Heidi

I will admit I have to give up on this one! Someone just asked me how many hummingbirds I have at my three feeders.

Yes, I often take pencil and paper, plus the essential cup of coffee, out on the front deck when it is time to write this column. The many visiting hummers do set the mood:

How can one be lazy and just do nothing when the tiny birds never stop, other than to perch on their feeders?

  • Miranda Serna camp a big success

Organizers of the Miranda Serna Memorial Basketball Camp are calling the event a success, saying that 62 youths ages 7 to 10 participated.
The camp took place July 15-17, and there were plenty of volunteers to help participants learn the basics of basketball. The idea to start the camp came from Miranda’s cousin Aaron Chavez, a former Ranger and now a Bakersfield College coach in California, and from Miranda’s former coach and Mora Middle School Coach Jeannie Abeyta.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Egyptian Camel saddles needed to be banned

Suddenly it is summer, and it is time to move the geranium jungle out of the living room and out on the deck. Hiding in plain sight is one of my two camel saddles. With Egypt now in the news, my two camel saddles and their history came to mind.

Yes, my Aunt Elvira and I rode camels around the pyramids in Egypt during our big trip in 1953. Neither one of us knew what a camel saddle looked like, but there are the usual tourist photos of us riding these camels.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Gov. Cargo’s impact on Mora county

New Mexico has lost a true friend recently. I have known David Cargo for a long time, and those of us who knew him well will never forget him. I can assure you of that.

  • Mora County Notebook: Remembering ‘Lonesome Dave’

Gov. David F. Cargo will be greatly missed in our state of New Mexico. He has meant a lot to the people especially those in the small communities.

His influential and caring concern for the state went far beyond his time as governor. He continued to be involved in the government and the needs of the small communities. In Mora, he was much loved by the people.

He did so much for them and other small communities while he was governor and continued to show his concern afterwards.
