Mora County Notebook - Mora’s talented workers

We have many talented workers in Mora who help keep the community going. Most of them are graduates of Mora High School.

We have plumbers, electricians, contractors, linemen and business men, and those who work behind the scenes doing thankless jobs for our community
One who aspires to be a contractor, plumber or electrician has to work in that area under a licensed contractor for several years before he can go through a rigorous test to qualify as a licensed contractor in building, plumbing and electrical work. Some go to school to learn a trade.

Mora County Notebook: Manuel Alcon — One of Mora’s treasures

Manuel Alcon, a husband, father, teacher, principal, superintendent writer and community leader, has devoted his life to helping others.
He was born in Ocate on Sept. 18, 1926, to Benjamin Alcon De Buck and Rosaura Montoya. The name Buck came from Manuel’s great-grandfather who was a soldier at Fort Union and married his great-grandmother who was an Alcon but his father did not keep the name Alcon De Buck and shortened it to Alcon. Manuel was the sixth born of seven siblings, all girls except for him.

Mora County Notebook - Local restaurant has new owners

Last Monday was the first day for the reopening of the Cowboy Kitchen. It turned out to be a very busy day with people anxious to see the newly remodeled facility and meet the new owners. There were a few weeks of remodeling and planning. In the remodeled restaurant there is new pine paneling on the walls and a new coat of colorful paint. There are two new owners who have bought the business from Johnny and Phyllis Martinez and Gary Martinez, their son. Gary and his folks and the new owners were instrumental in remodeling the facility.

Mora County Notebook: Mora native gets recognized at legislature

Manuel Montoya, a Mora native and graduate of Mora High School has received yet another honor. He had graduated with a double doctorate from Emory University and has come back to New Mexico to be a professor at UNM and serve the people here.

Recently at the state legislature’s UNM Day Manuel along with a few other faculty were recognized on the floor of the house and senate for their distinctive work at UNM.

UNM President David Schmidly praised Montoya at the event.
