  • Mora County Notebook - Closing ceremony held for Little League

The Mora Little League and tee-ball teams had a great season. After a summer of games with the Dodgers, Cardinals, Rockies and A’s pitted against each other every Tuesday and Wednesday evening, the final games were held and awards were given to the players and those who made it possible. There are two fields  for the Little League and a special field for the tee-ball players so that three games can be played simultaneously.

  • Palabras Pintorescas - The life of a country doctor

It is time for yet another medical — as in Valmora — story. My readers know I was born and raised in that Tuberculosis Sanatorium, and the book “Hovels, Haciendas and Housecalls” was written about my doctor father and Valmora by Dorothy Simpson several years ago.

  • Mora County Notebook: Family Dollar opening store in Mora

The Family Dollar Store will soon be opened in Mora. The building and parking lot have been ready and waiting for quite some time now. People have been watching the  progress of the building since the land was cleared, base put down and the building going up. The parking lot was prepared with parking spaces drawn out and the area readied for business. Now at last the completions is about to happen with an opening date around July 18.

According to Gene Urioste, they will have the interior ready and workers hired by that date.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Saluting Rogers’ book

The nearest forest fires so near to our watersheds were of great concern to those of us who live in these mountains. The smoke alone caused us to spend a lot of time watching for flying embers that could ignite a fire anywhere there is dry grass. There is lots of that everywhere now. May the rains come now.
My last column, “Palabras Pintorescas (word pictures) was devoted to a review of the brand new book by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, “Learning Las Vegas,” that just hit our Tome on the Range bookstore.

  • Mora County Notebook: Summerfest raises money for theater

The VFW Building and grounds was a busy place on Saturday as people set up their booths for the many people who came to enjoy the day visiting with friends and neighbors and shopping and playing games. Mora Summerfest was truly a family affair.

There were two food booths where people bought food and many booths with cookies, pies, tortillas and even watermelon. There were  six games with prizes for winners that were popular. They included balloon bust, ring toss and so forth.

  • Palabras Pintorescas: Elizabeth Rogers’ book is a good piece of art

I have an old, intricately designed and sewed patchwork quilt. I have worked many a jigsaw puzzle, and I have admired many beautiful mosaics in many different places. It takes talent to line up all of those pieces into a real work of art.
Such is the case with a very new book about Las Vegas. “Learning Las Vegas, Portrait of a Northern New Mexico Place” by Elizabeth Barlow Rogers is an unbelievably good piece of journalism.

  • Mora County Notebook: Strategic planning session held

On Saturday, a large group of Mora County citizens gathered at the Mora School Board Room to hold their first strategic planning session with professional facilitators guiding the work.
Over the last few decades Mora County has been in the process of planning for the future of the county.

The Mora Comprehensive Land Use Plan  developed in the early ‘90s is the result of many Mora citizens and officials creating a complete overview of the future needs of the county.
